In this article I argue for the relevance of examining tolerance in Victorian literature its specificity and particularly as distinct from sympathy. Following a recent reconceptualization philosophy political theory, recovering roots Latin term tolerare , which means “to suffer,” endure,” suggest that novels explore cognitive, emotional, physical pains involved tolerance. studies thus add an important perspective to current discussions tolerance, while, conversely, focus on reveals category yet overshadowed by strong sympathy field.
